Rachel

Rachel North is an Ipswich based artist and educator, working across textiles and ceramics. Growing up and living in predominantly rural and regional areas, her connection to landscape is an inherent component of her artworks.

She has exhibited in group and solo shows in Townsville, Brisbane and Ipswich, and been a finalist and won awards for her artworks. She has also been the recipient of grants and bursaries.

Rachel explores representations of landscapes in her works, examining the depth of tread on places traversed and connectivity to these spaces. Communicating predominantly in ceramics and textile-based installation works, the artist’s consciousness about the impact of human activity and how the landscape shapes, holds and hinders memory in central to her multi-disciplinary approach. With a historiographical approach to forms to drive conceptual development, North manipulates materials to emphasise the temporality of memory within the landscapes of their formation and the impact of human behaviour on memory.
